Essential marketing tips to stay relevant in your career

The world of marketing is changing super fast nowadayswith social media and digital marketing leading the charge. In fact, “marketing’s changed more in the past 5 years than in the past 500 years” – says Sanjay Dholakia, Marketo Chief Marketing Officer. Avoid becoming a marketing dinosaur by following these simple yet essential marketing tips for how to stay relevant in your career.


The Ladders conducted a survey asking two very important questions of marketers:

  • What is your educational background in and how do you feel your degree has aged as your career has progressed?

  • If you could give one piece of advice to a new marketer looking to stay relevant in an ever-changing industry what would it be?

My own responses to these two important questions are:

  • I have a Master in International Marketing which has been extremely helpful in having a career in Marketing. The degree today needs to include a lot more information about how the Internet is affecting businesses worldwide, digital marketing and social media implications.
  • Stay up to speed with the latest trends, read a lot of books and blogs and stay active in the industry. Unless you are working in it, just reading about it won’t help as small things change all the time and the only way to stay current is to be in it every day.
