Social Media 101

Social Media 101

I must say as marketers we need to have a really good understanding of the nature and power of social media before we jump in and start acting on behalf of our brands. I found a really good blog on the basis of social media marketing. You can read it here.

In addition to understanding social media in general you will need to have a good understanding of the many tools and websites that exist. Of course, you can concentrate on the top 4-5 depending on what you are trying to achieve. There is an excellent blog explaining how to go about making your choices. as long as you understand buffet style choices. You can read it here.

With Facebook surpassing MySpace by the numbers and social sites overcoming email activity, it’s obvious that social media is here to stay and we as marketers will definitely need to develop an understanding of it. There are plenty of tools and resources on the web that will teach you just about anything you would like to know. There are also many conferences that you can attend. My advice to you if you are just now starting it to pick one social site and start using it. Don’t get overwhelmed by the stream of information. Pick one and jump in. Listen to the conversation and slowly start participating. Build relationships. It’s just like meeting people at a bar. You don’t immediately make friends with everyone, it takes time. It may take you all night to have a conversation with everyone at a dinner party. Social media is very similar. It takes time to establish and build relationships. And remember to have fun while doing it.
