The impact of social media on travel&tourism – infographic
Happy 4th of July and Happy 3rd year birthday to Out&About Marketing! A lot to celebrate this week!
Very often I hear marketing professionals in the travel&tourism industry discuss the impact social media is having on influencing peoples’ behavior when it comes to making travel decisions. Sites like Yelp and TripAdvisor are becoming the go to resources and a must check place if you are looking at booking a hotel, a destination or visiting a restaurant.
Below is a good infographic on the subject. The main takeaways are:
- 48% say social media has a huge influence on booking travel
- 52% of Facebook users said their friends’ photos inspired their holiday choice. So, keep posting these photos from your next vacation.
- 92% trust recommendations from friends, 47% trust paid TV, magazine and newspaper ads. This number actually surprised me as in different research I’ve seen it as low as 14% of people trusting advertising.
- 46% of travelers post hotel reviews after their trip.
What are you doing to make sure you are listening to what your customers are saying about your destination or property and how are you dealing with negative and positive feedback? Are you using free or paid platforms to make sure you gather feedback online about your business?
Obviously, social media is here to stay. Are you deeply involved in it to understand your customer needs or are you leaving it to the youngest person in the office or the intern? My advice it to take social media seriously. If you do now, your business may still be around 5 years from now.
Hope you had a great 4th of July and posted photos from your fireworks show. It may help your destination get some new people to visit it. Now, go ahead and pin this your board – you may need it later.
All the best,
